Mr.Z and Divining Rod to Rematch in Indiana Derby

Mr.Z and Divining Rod to Rematch in Indiana Derby

Category : News - Fri 17/07/2015 - 14:14 EDT

Despite winning just 2 of 15 career starts, Mr.Z (2/1), has been a steady stakes performer for Hall of Fame trainer D. Wayne Lukas, and finally came up with a  breakthrough score last time out in the Ohio Derby. The well-traveled Mr. Z has run at five different racetracks in 2015, and ten different tracks in his career. Mr.Z finished thirteenth in the Kentucky Derby and fifth in the Preakness before regrouping to win the Ohio Derby amid a blanket finish. The son of Malibu Moon has earned $997,226, and will be ridden again by Joe Bravo who was in the irons for the Ohio Derby win.

Divining Rod should be sharp again

Divining Rod (5/2) finished a close third behind Mr.Z in the Ohio Derby, and third in the Preakness Stakes prior to that effort. Trained by Arnaud Delacour, and owned by Lael Stable of Barbaro fame, Diving Rod has won 2 of 7 career starts, including a victory in the Grade 3 Lexington Stakes. A model of consistency, the son of Tapit has never finished out of the money.

Pair of outsiders with legitimate chance

Up-and-comer, Island Town (3/1) captured the Grade 3 Matt Winn Stakes June 13 at Churchill Downs and appears to be coming into his own for trainer Ian Wilkes. Far Right (12/1) could be an enticing value play despite a dull effort in the Ohio Derby.
