Kentucky Derby 2023: Long shot Mage offers a lot for a big price

The Grade 3 $100,000 Dogwood Stakes is the feature race September 20 at Churchill Downs with ten three-year-old fillies lined up to contest the seven furlong event on the main track.
Fiftyshadesofgold is the 2/1 morning line favorite for trainer William Brett Calhoun and looks ready to fire again. The daughter of My Golden Song is two for two at Churchill Downs and has recorded two bullet works since finishing fourth in the Grade 1 Test at Saratoga August 2. In addition, Fiftyshadesofgold has shown an affinity for the seven furlong distance winning two of three career starts including the Grade 3 Eight Belles at Churchill in May. The only concern for her might be avoiding a speed duel with the horse drawn to her inside – 15/1 shot Platinum Lady who is shipping in from Canterbury Downs. Fiftyshadesofgold has proven capable rating just off the pace.
Milam tries to flip the script
7/2 second choice Milam could take advantage if a fast, contentious pace does develop. The Eddie Kenneally trained filly was beaten just a half length by Fiftyshadesofgold in the Eight Belles and should be rolling late for jockey Corey Lanerie. Milam is returning to the races since finishing third in the Grade 3 Victory Ride Stakes June 3 at Belmont.
Marlylou adds blinkers
Slow-starter Thank You Marylou should benefit from the addition of blinkers and is another runner who would appreciate fast fractions on the front end. Thank You Marylou will have to avoid traffic, but is a contender on her best day.
