Kentucky Derby 2023: Long shot Mage offers a lot for a big price

A pair of scratches including morning line favorite Munnings Sister will leave 10 fillies and mares to go to the gate Monday afternoon at Saratoga for the $100,000 Smart N Fancy Stakes. The ninth race of 10 on the card, the Smart N Fancy goes 5 1/2 furlongs on the turf.
With the withdrawl of Munnings Sister, 5-2 ML favorite status falls to Free as a Bird, a five-year-old Kentucky-bred daughter of Hard Spun. Trained by Ian Wilkes, she comes into this one riding a three-race winning streak, the most recent of those a 3/4-length score over the same track and distance on August 1. All three of those wins were in stakes' company, and she now has four wins and two place-finishes in six starts in 2014.
To My Valentine looking for second US stakes score
Second choice at 4-1 is the French-bred To My Valentine, stakes-placed on home soil before coming to Gulfstream in early 2013 . She went wire-to-wire to win at the $80,000 AOC level last time out on the Belmont turf, and she has one US stakes win to her credit, having captured the Kentucky Downs Ladies Sprint last September. Since then she’s been far back in two other stakes tries at Keeneland and Pimlico this year.
Stars Above Me a proven winner at Saratoga
At 6-1 in the ML, Stars Above Me could prove to be a serious threat at a decent price. Bred in the UK, the Graham Motion filly started her season overseas, and then shipped across the pond to win the Coronation Cup at Saratoga by a solid 2 1/4 lengths after overcoming all kinds of trouble, from the break onward. The well-traveled Goldenstryke Glory (12-1) ships in from Woodbine, where she was last seen finishing third in the Grade 3 Royal North Stakes, behind two that have since come back to win.
