Steel Cut Returns to Louisiana for $75,000 Gold Coast Stakes

On Friday at Delta Downs, the featured race is the $75,000 Gold Coast Stakes. Restricted to fillies and mares that have started at either Delta Downs or Evangeline Downs in the past year, the one mile contest has drawn a field of seven.

Steel Cut tops the field as the morning line favorite at odds of 5-2 for trainer Wesley Hawley who is also listed as her owner. A five-year-old daughter of Cactus Ridge, she is a nine time career winner and will be trying to earn her second black type victory. She is returning to Louisiana after competing at Oaklawn Park in both starts this year and won an allowance race last time out. Donnie Meche will be aboard and they will break from post position three.

Forest Lake going for fourth straight win

Second choice at morning line odds of 3-1 is Forest Lake for trainer Jerry Delhomme. A four-year-old daughter of Forestry, the Louisiana-bred filly has been on the board in twelve of her fifteen starts and is a five-time winner. A multiple stakes winner, she is coming into this race off of three straight victories and defeated state-bred stakes company last time out. Hector Santiago will be aboard from post five.

Lunar Gaze trying to return to form

Also in the field at morning line odds of 10-1 is longshot Lunar Gaze for trainer Tom Amoss. A four-year-old daughter of Malibu Moon, she was purchased for $250,000 as a yearling and has four wins from nine starts. She will be trying to earn her first stakes victory and will try to rebound after finishing fourth in the Eldorado Stakes last time out. Gerard Melancon will be aboard from the outside post.
